First World Problems

Some time ago, the video, “First World Problems Read By Third World People”, traveled across social media.   Adults and children in Haiti read problems as viewed by those who live in first world countries. They say lines such as,

“I hate it when my phone charger won’t reach my bed.”

“My mint gum makes my ice water taste too cold.”

The whole point, as you can imagine, is to acutely put into perspective the deep and real physical needs of those living in third world countries. In this case, the need for clean water for those who live in Haiti. Though quick in content, it is an abrupt reminder of what truly matters.

As I watched this video, I was reminded of Jesus’ words in the book of John,

14 but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (John 4:14 NIV)

While the need for access to drinkable water is a prominent need across the globe, at the core, all of us need the water to which Jesus refers. We need the refreshing of His Spirit working through us as He weaves us through this unique and complex and fascinating life.

This, I believe, is a beautiful answer to an all world problem.
